Gabrielson worked for the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey from 1915 to 1940, becoming Chief in 1934. In 1940, the Survey became the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Gabrielson served as director until 1946. From 1946 to 1970, he served as President of the Wildlife Management Institute, then as chairman of the Board from 1970 to 1977. Howard Clinton Zahniser (b.1906) was an American environmental activist. He worked for the Biological Survey, later known as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1931-1943). Zahniser also served as Executive Secretary of the Wilderness Society and editor of its magazine: Living Wilderness (1945-1964). He was instrumental in drafting legislation which later became known as the Wilderness Act (1964).
